Pride can be a great aid. It can keep you within social boundaries, ensure your willingness to participate in physical upkeep and help you maintain motivation to succeed in life. It can also, if left to its devices, keep you out of a perfectly good online dating relationship.

Have you ever found yourself arguing with your spouse or significant other over something trivial, and realized half-way through that you were wrong? Did you then keep going, still knowing you were arguing a losing point? I know I have, and it got me wondering why. As human beings we’re naturally prideful. Again, while this often serves our good it can also be a huge downfall if not checked regularly. Who knows how many otherwise great relationships have ended over one or both parties being too prideful to admit wrong doing and apologize. Or for that matter, admit being wrong period. More fights are caused in relationships over issues of pride than infidelity or money, I would wager. And what about those situations where you know your partner is wrong but they’ll never admit it? Do you simply keep arguing until the end of time, split up, or do you simply apologize yourself and drop the subject just to appease them out of an otherwise senseless argument? True enough, there are some issues on which you should stand your ground and resolve before moving on, if moving on is even possible. As for those other petty issues that have no true meaning, like who won the World Series in 2005 or what marinade works best on steak, perhaps we would all do better to not sweat the small stuff. Perhaps we’d all be a little happier if we could more easily accept being wrong from time to time.

I heard a woman make the comment and I quote, “I am now off the market, I have found someone that completes me, please respect my relationship”. Seriously? Did someone really feel the need to put that out there, number one and number two: how can someone complete you?

I’m OK with someone wanting to shout to the world that they are in love, that’s beautiful and you should be happy about your relationship. My problem is the statement, you complete me, I mean that was great in Jerry Maguire, but that was a movie, not real life. The statement means you were never whole in the first place and who really wants someone that needy.

You have made someone else responsible for your happiness and unhappiness and every other emotion and feeling you have because without them you are broken. Talk about a lot of pressure; people have to be careful about the words they put out in the universe or even the pressure they put on a relationship.

What you should be looking for is someone that compliments who you are and vice versa, your significant should be able to help you through troubling times but not carry you. If the person you are with turns into your counselor, lover, friend, mother, father, etc, then your dating site relationship will not last long at all. No one wants to be everything to you; they want to be able to give you the love they have for you. There is a difference in loving someone in spite of their issues as opposed to loving someone because of them. The only person that can complete you is you, so work on you and let your mate work on showering you with love.

I can’t say that I actually watched the royal wedding because that would be lying and inevitably someone will catch me in that lie. So I can say that while I did not see the ceremony I did see the procession to Buckingham Palace in the 17th century carriage. I can also say that they looked absolutely in love and she is unquestionably a beautiful woman.

What I want to talk about is the fairytale part of this event. I watched the queen of talk shows Oprah; she made a statement that stuck out to me. Oprah said we all know that fairy tales are not true but we hope they have a great life together. True sentiment all around, the part that struck me was we all know that fairy tales aren’t true.

I don’t think some women believe that, I find a lot of women think that some prince is going to ride up on a white horse and save them from their miserable lives. Honey, that ain’t neva gonna happen. While I do believe The Duke and Duchess (see I learned something) love each other, they have a long road ahead of them. They have a lot of people watching their every move all the time.

Normal relationships can’t handle a few family members and friends getting in their business. Just think if everyone in the world had something to say about your relationship. See ladies, that is the reality of the fairytale, it’s not real. Relationships are hard and they require a lot of work: what I want everyone to understand is that while the wedding was undoubtedly beautiful and elegant and prestigious, you can be sure that just like the rest of us, after the wedding, real life steps in and let me tell you, she can be a bitch.

I spoke to my brother’s girlfriend yesterday, not anything I initiated… technically. I am always promoting different people and their endeavors on my Facebook page. Sometimes people respond and other times they don’t, on this occasion my little brother’s girlfriend responded. My friend owns an event company and she was selling different romantic baskets, my brother’s girlfriend sees them and says she wishes she had someone to give a basket to and I said you do, my brother. Her response was, they are not together anymore. I ask her if she was serious and she said yes, I said the same thing you always say, “Oh I’m sorry to hear that”. I thought the conversation was over…not. I spend the next 30 minutes on Facebook consoling her and giving her a bit of my online dating wisdom.

What I have found about generation X is they are lazy and quick tempered. What I learned from talking to her was, she basically jumped to conclusions about something, went off on my brother (for the last time) and he broke up with her. After she calmed down she realized how ridiculous she behaved and the consequences to her actions and now she is going to die from the heartache. The best advice I could give her was, in the future learn to control your emotions because in the heat of the moment you will say anything and apologies don’t always work. As in this case, he was tired of her always flying off the handle about nothing. He was not interested in hearing apologies anymore and the consequences for her actions are… she is alone and depressed. So ladies, before you decide to fly off the handle, do what Whitley Gilbert did on A Different World and …relax, relate, release!
